Silverton was established in 1874 and was once simply one of many bustling towns in San Juan
County. Little or nothing remains above the soil surface of many of our neighboring towns due to the closing of many of the mines
and mills, fire, avalanche disasters and the scrapping of metal for the war effort during World War II. The county seat and the onlymunicipality in the county is now the Town of Silverton. Animas Forks and Red Mountain Town are still fabulous examples of yesterday
year, still having many of their buildings intact with some help from modern day man. For more information on Silverton and San Juan
County’s history be sure to visit our history page.
Silverton's (second) Town Hall, located at 1360 Greene St., was erected in 1909.
Despite numerous challenges, including a fire that gutted the building in 1992, it continues to serve and house our town government.
Silverton’s first Town Hall’s shell can still be seen on Notorious Blair Street next to the blue information booth. The town footprint
of Silverton is located on an extinct volcanic caldera, making this mountainous valley accessable but still reaching 9,318 feet in
elevation. Town Hall Hours: 9am to 5pm; Closed from Noon to 1pm/Monday - Friday For more information on Silverton’s Town Hall log
